We have come out with a book on clinical examination with the emphasis on local experience and cases.

These are common examination cases.

 

This book is designed to meet the need of those preparing for exam (undergraduate or postgraduate).We try to illustrate each case with reasonable approach and share interesting signs. The cases chosen are relevant to our local practice. Commonly asked questions and answers were discussed in this book.

Dear colleagues and friends,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome all of you to the 2^nd Penang Dermatology Symposium, which is organized by the Department of Dermatology, Hospital Pulau Pinang.  The main objective of the symposium is to provide a continuous medical education program in the field of dermatology for all government doctors and private practitioners.

Our theme for this year is “Pediatric Dermatology”. This presents an opportunity to update and equip ourselves with the knowledge needed in facing the challenges of managing pediatric dermatology cases especially among the neonates or infants.   We are indeed privileged and honored to have all the four Pediatric Dermatologists in country to be here to share their experience and expertise.

I would like to express our gratitude to the Penang Hospital Director, all invited speakers, co-organizers, sponsors and all the staff of the Department of Dermatology for their support and anyone who in one way or the other has contributed in making this event possible

Department of Dermatology, Hospital Pulau Pinang is actively involved in medical education and research activities to promote the advancement of dermatology. Many courses / workshops / talks in dermatology are organized to update practitioners on the new developments in clinical dermatology, while research facilities are continuously being updated to complement our clinical teaching capabilities.

Medical Education for Dermatology Sub-speciality Training

Department of Dermatology, Hospital Pulau Pinang is one of the training centre for “Advanced Master in Dermatology”, to train residents into the next generation of dermatologists. Residents take part in structured academic activities such as journal clubs, book clubs, case presentations, picture slide sessions & clinicopathological conferences and are encouraged to conduct original research studies during their training.

In 2009, we have 1 trainee joining the department.

Medical Education for Postgraduates

Department of Dermatology, Hospital Pulau Pinang is also one of the training centre for master students in internal medicine and family medicine. They will attached with our department for 1-2 months duration each. Structured assessments are held at the end of the postings to ensure their competency.

Medical Education for Undergraduates

Undergraduates of the medical faculty of Penang Medical College and Penang International Dental College are trained in dermatology at Department of Dermatology, Hospital Pulau Pinang. Undergraduate medical education focuses on core curriculum of common dermatological diseases - their presentation and practical management.

We also accepted local universities and overseas elective undergraduate medical students. Structured assessments are also held at the end of the postings to ensure their competency.

“Toward A Regional Centre of Excellence in Dermatology”

Department of Dermatology is a tertiary dermatology referral centre in northern region of peninsular Malaysia. It includes 3 main categories of diseases – Skin, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) & Hansen’s disease (Leprosy).

Objectives

1.       Treating skin disorders which include sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy, to reduce the pain, disfigurement, mortality and morbidity caused by the illness.

2.       To reduce the incidence of skin disorders by

A.      Health education and advice to the public

B.      Notification of communicable diseases as stated by law

C.      Providing training and continuous medical education to locally or abroad medical personnel, paramedics and medical students.   

Brief History

Penang General Hospital, now known as Hospital Pulau Pinang, is the government hospital in Penang. It is located along Jalan Residensi, with various departments sprawled on the opposite side of the road as well as along Jalan Sepoy Lines. The General Hospital building dates back to 1882.

In 1947, Skin Clinic was formally situated in C Block of the Hospital. Skin clinic offered services like treatment for common skin diseases including Hansen’s disease (Inpatient) but sexually transmitted diseases were managed separately in “Social Hygiene Clinic” which was established in Kampong Kolam area.

In 1965, the “Social Hygiene Clinic” was integrated with the Skin Clinic at the hospital. In 20th November 1975, the “Social Hygiene Clinic” was shifted to the Macalister Road Polyclinic where it remains today. In 1981, the “Social Hygiene Clinic” at Macalister Road was integrated with the Hansen’s clinic at Perak Road.

In 1990s, both “Social Hygiene Clinic” and Hansen’s Clinic were shifted back to Hospital Pulau Pinang and integrated with Skin Clinic forming Department of Dermatology. The Department of Dermatology / Clinic was then reallocated a place at 1^st Floor, Room 105, central service block.
